Getting a Flu Shot Can Help You Stay Healthy

Would you prefer to take a vacation or spend a few days or more in the hospital? Would you rather enjoy time with friends and family or end up at home in bed sick?  If you want to avoid a hospital stay and stay healthy, be sure that you get your flu shot every fall. Here are some facts about flu shots:
·        The flu shot will not cause the flu
·        You are less likely to get seriously ill with the flu, if you get the flu shot
·        It is recommended for all people with diabetes over the age of  6 months
·        It is not too late to get vaccinated.

Could you have diabetes or pre-diabetes and not know it?

 An estimated 1 out of 3 adults and half of all seniors lives with pre-diabetes and 90% don’t even know it!

·         Pre-diabetes, if not treated, can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.
·         Take for test to see if you may be living with diabetes or pre-diabetes at:

·         See your provider to check for  diabetes if you scored ‘high’ on the risk test.

Diabetes and Depression

Having diabetes can cause many to have problems with stress, depression or anxiety.  Sometimes working to manage diabetes can seem like a full time job, plus there are extra costs linked to having diabetes. In addition, if you don’t manage your diabetes, you may develop serious health problems!
           You may be depressed if:  you are often sad; having feelings of helplessness;  are irritable or  tired often; have problems remembering things; sleep too much or can’t sleep; no longer enjoy doing things you used to love to do; eating too much or not enough; having thoughts about suicide or have aches and pains that don’t get better with treatment.

            Talk to you health care provider if you think you might be depressed. Taking medication and/or talk therapy can help.

Helping a Friend or Family member who lives with Diabetes

Living with diabetes can be difficult. If you have a friend or family member living with diabetes, here are a few ways that you can be helpful.

·         Remember – you are not their doctor or diabetes educator.  Diabetes care had changed a lot over the years and each person living with diabetes has unique needs. 
·         Ask how you can help – your role isn’t to tell people with diabetes what to do, rather you can help support the changes they want to make.

Tips to help manage diabetes during the holidays

Food, food and more food is everywhere, including cookies, candies, holiday buffets, special drinks and more. What’s a person with diabetes supposed to do over the holidays? Take some advice from the Boy Scouts – Be Prepared.
     If attending a party, bring some food along to share that you know will help you stay with your eating plan.
              -  Choose low or no calorie drinks
              -   Plan times to be active
              -  Focus on time with friends and family instead of food.
            -   Start some new traditions that highlight activity, such as volunteering or sharing an adventure.  
                          -  Ask one or more friends or family members to help support you during the holiday.
